The Peruvian Pacific Coast
The Peruvian Pacific coast is mostly desert. If you just want to lay on a beach, stay to the north. For archaeological travel on the coast, sand boarding on sand dunes and close access to some of the highlights in the Andes, your best bet is the south. Some highlights on the Peruvian coast include:
Nazca Lines - These mysterious lines and figures etched into thelandscape on the desert coast of Peru are now a World Heritage Site and are best seen from the air.
Trujillo - on the Pacific coast is one of Peru's largest cities with a population of 650,000 and is great as a launching point to visit Chan Chan.
Chan Chan - 5 km (3 mi) west of Trujillo, was the largest pre-Colombian city in South America as the capital of the Chimu kingdom around 1300 AD. Some archaeologists believe it was the largest adobe city ever.
Ica - population 152,000, is in the middle of dune-filled deserts on the banks of the Ica River and offers nearby sand boarding (like snowboarding but on the sand dunes) as well as tours of local graperies, wineries and distilleries.
