Montevideo Travel Overview

Montevideo (population: 1,400,000) can be seen in two days. Divided into old town, Ciudad Vieja, and new town, this capital city features beaches, colonial plazas, outdoor cafes, and a plethora of restaurants, nightclubs and casinos. The Ciudad Vieja is being refurbished and will hopefully soon outgrow its seedy reputation.

Don't miss the following highlights in Montevideo:

The Mercado del Puerto, a former train station, is now a hot-spot for traditional food and drink in an ornate building with bars and parrilladas (grills) from corner to corner loaded with the best Uruguayan meat. Sit on a barstool and watch your meal sizzle, or wait at a nearby table.

Cultural attractions like the marvelous Teatro Sols just off the Plaza de la Independencia and museums are a highlight in Montevideo. The Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda in the Edificio Banco de la Repblica features the interesting history of the Uruguayan gaucho, cowboy.

Nine beaches from Playa Ramrez to Playa Carrasco from east to west stretch almost completely along the waterfront. They are fairly clean and great for sun bathing on sandy beaches. The seawater is muddy, thanks to the Ro de la Plata outlet nearby, but is safe to bathe in.
